Canary Island Date Palm (Common Name)
Phoenix Canariensis ( Botanical Name)
Description:
Massive and imposing, the Canary Island Date Palm can be the main focal point wherever it may be planted. Growing up to 60' tall, the thick, hulking trunk is covered with interesting diamond designs that mark the point of attachment of the leaves. The massive trunk supports a huge crown of over 50 huge arching pinnate leaves that may reach 18' long. These leaves are deep green shading to a yellow stem where the leaflets are replaced by spines.
Usage:
This palm is NOT recommened for residences unless you have a really BIG yard. This palm is best used along boulevards, on campuses and in parks and grouped in trios to form focal points in cityscapes. The look of a trio of these palms of different heights, with their trunks floodlit at night will make a very dramatic impressoin of your home! Small specimens make great container plants - they look especially nice in large terra cotta pots. In colder regions they can be over-wintered indoors in a cool, bright location.
Features
If you want to make a dramatic statement, use this huge imposing palm wherever there is space to accommodate it. Small specimens are inexpensive and look great in pots on the patio, near the pool, or in pairs flanking entryways.

Windmill Fan Palm (Common Name)
Trachycarpus Fortunei (Botanical Name)
Description:
Windmill Palm is one of the most cold hardy palms available. It is beautifully compact and grows to heights of 20 to
40 feet. Windmill Palm has a rather slender single stem that is 8 to 10 inches in diameter and is typically a bit narrower at the base than at the top. Trunks are usually covered with a loose mat of coarse gray or brown fiber. In older individuals the fiber sloughs away to reveal a smooth ringed surface. Leaves are circular, about 3 feet in diameter and segmented about halfway.
They are flat with leaf segment tips held stiffly, but occasionally you will see individuals with droopy tips. Leaves are arranged into a symmetrical crown that is about 8 to 10 feet wide. Specimens grown in full sun and/or under poor conditions may have much smaller, more compact crowns.
Usage: This palm makes a great accent which fits well into small areas like courtyards and entries. It is a tough plant and survives in hot urban landscapes and even thrives there if watered and fed. It is very attractive planted in groves and groupings especially when plants of different heights are staggered in irregular patterns.
Sago Palm (Common Name)
Cycas Revoluta (Botanical Name)
Description:
While various species of Sago Palms can be found throughout the world, the subtropical Sago Palm is native to the Far East and the cold hardy Sago Palm has been used as a choice container and landscape plant for centuries. The growth habit of Sago Palms displays an upright trunk with a diameter from 1" to 12" depending on age, topped with stiff feather-like leaves growing in a circular pattern. Rather than continuously adding foliage, a Sago Palm produces a periodic "flush" of new leaves, called a "break". Eventually, offsets begin to grow at the base of the Sagos, and occasionally in the crown. The addition of offsets provides a source of new plants and many possibilities for developing an unique specimen.
Usage: Sago Palms add a nice touch too other ground cover plants or in small flower beds. To give yourself a more tropical look, Sago Palms can also be used in pots to put on a patio or near a pool.
